Ebook About Ed Simon tells the story of Pittsburgh through this collection of explorations of its hidden histories—one of Newsweek's "21 Best Books to Read This Spring."The land surrounding the confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio rivers has supported communities of humans for millennia. In the past four centuries, however, it has been transformed utterly and many times over by the people who call it home. In this brief, lyrical, and idiosyncratic new book, Ed Simon follows the story of America's furnace through a series of interconnected segments, covering all manner of Pittsburgh-beloved people, places, and things, including:Paleolithic PittsburghThe Whiskey RebellionThe attempted assassination of Henry FrickThe HarmonistsThe Mystery, Pittsburgh's radical, Black nationalist newspaperThe myth of Joe Magaracand Billy Strayhorn, Duke Ellington, Andy Warhol, and much much moreAccessible, conversational, and funny, An Alternative History of Pittsburgh is a must-read for anyone curious about this storied city, and for Pittsburghers who think they know it all-too-well already.Book An Alternative History of Pittsburgh Review :
I devoured "An Alternative History of Pittsburgh," Simon writes with confidence, panache, and scholarly depth. So much fascinating American history can be found in these short but wide-ranging essays, and the capsule format is ideal for bite-size reading and ruminating. The format also gives readers the pleasure of making the mental connections to larger historical events and themes on their own. And surprises abound, even for those who know the city better than most. The concept would be a brilliant one to extend to other cities, each written by their own accomplished native sons and daughters. Pittsburgh's history is too interesting to be known only by its residents, and that is surely true of other cities as well. Simon has demonstrated how it should be done. I was born and raised in Pittsburgh (well, the suburbs anyway), so of course I asked Belt Publishing for an advance reviewer copy of An Alternative History of Pittsburgh by Ed Simon. And when this man says history, he is not kidding. I can only imagine the amount of research he did.Simon puts forth the idea that certain places have unmistakeable connotations. When you hear “Manhattan” or “Hollywodd,” you understand the implications. He feels Pittsburgh is also such a place.Part of this is linked to geography; part is linked to generations of immigrants from various countries, many of whom labored in the iconic steel mills. This tale of Pittsburgh is episodic consisting of 40 fragments along with tangents. He starts the story of my favorite city back in 300 million BCE when it was on the East Coast of a forgotten continent named Laurasia and brings it up to present day. Along the way, he relates highlights dear to Pittsburghers such as Mazeroski’s home run in the bottom of the ninth to win the 1960 World Series (one of the happiest days of my father’s life) and lowlights such as British Colonel Henry Bouquet’s deliberate infecting of Native Americans with smallpox via “gift” blankets. (His name is still on a street in the Oakland section of the city.)We briefly meet the movers and shakers who shaped Pittsburgh: Carnegie, Frick, and others not as well known. Pittsburgh’s cultural scene is covered: AndyWarhol, August Wilson, Billy Eckstine (but no Fred Rogers). As a native daughter of a certain age, I lived through some of what is in Simon’s book. Some I had a vague recollection of learning in a long agohistory class. But some was totally new to me. I confess I skimmed through some of it; some of it fascinated me. If you weren’t brought up in Pittsburgh, your reaction might be very different,Simon concludes his book with a poetic paragraph about what he calls Pittsburgh’s spirit of place.“There is something transcendental about how the rivers wind and cut through green robed mountains, the manner in which the valleys descend into the earth and the hills puncture the horizon like the planet’s spine.”That’s kind of high falutin’ talk for the Pittsburgh I know.
