The Sea of Cortez is a recounting of a journey John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts took early in the 1940s to collect specimens from the tide pools of the Sea of Cortez. Ed Ricketts was a marine biologist who was the inspiration for "Doc" in Cannery Row. This was a voyage that started in Monterey Bay on the California coast and went down along Baja California into the Sea of Cortez. It is not a treatise so much on what they found but how the trip went and what they learned not just about the sea creatures of the intertidal but themselves also. It is a smooth tale from the pen of Steinbeck that characterizes all of his writing. This edition also includes the technical notes by Ricketts of what they found. If I had my druthers, I'd find a way to satisfy the desire raised by this book to duplicate the trip in order to satisfy me need to do so as a biologist. If you are at all interested in life sciences this really is one book you should read and have on your shelf. Amazing. I’m a bit biased as a huge Steinbeck fan and a marine biologist but the philosophy and deeper thoughts in this book are quite profound no matter what your background is.
